An oval jasperware medallion in light blue dip mounted in a gold bezel with scalloped edge and inset with pearls, glazed oval panel to the reverse and suspension ring, the medallion with white low relief decoration of Erato playing her kithara, her left foot resting on a low stool. Erato is one of the nine muses at the beginning of the Iliad and personifies romantic poetry.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Mary by the Hon. Lady Fortescue, widow of Sir John Fortescue, former Royal Librarian, 5 April 1934. The gold marks on the mount are post-1904. First recorded in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle in an inventory of Wedgwood porcelain dated 1914 - 17, to which later additions were made.
