A matt gold cigarette case with sapphire and diamond-set flower at corner.
Provenance
Given to the future Emperor Nicholas II, then the Tsarevich, by Princess Alix of Hesse, later Empress Alexandra, on their engagement at Coburg, April 1894. Nicholas and Alix were attending the wedding of Alix's brother to Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha when Nicholas proposed.
Bought in Moscow by Mr. Armstrong, a naval friend of King George V, and given to King George V, June 1929. -
