A circular plaster relief medallion depicting Hélène de Mecklembourg-Schwerin, duchess d'Orléans after her marriage to Ferdinand-Philippe d'Orleans, the oldest son of Louis-Philippe I of France. Hélène is depicted in profile facing right, with fashionable hair style with long plaits looped at her ears. The medallion is mounted in a square mahogany frame with a convex glass cover and a patterned gilt metal bezel. Jean-August Barre was a French sculptor and medallist. A regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from 1831, Barre concentrated in the production of miniature portraits of famous contemporary figures, including members of the French royal family and ballet and theatre celebrities.
