Watercolour on ivory | 28.7 x 19.7 cm (frame, external) | RCIN 422343
-
This miniature dates from around 1815. Francis I had more children after it was painted. Caroline and the baby Marie Antonia are seated on the draped bench, with Louisa behind them and Leopold offering a basket of roses. Maria Christina is picking roses from a bush, Ferdinand is holding a rose and Charles kneels in front.
Caroline (1798-1870) married the duke of Berry. Louisa (1804-44) married Francis de Paula of Spain. Maria Christina (1806-78) married Ferdinand VII of Spain. Ferdinand II (1806-59) is wearing the stars of St Januarius, St Ferdinand and Merit, and Charles III of Spain. Charles, Prince of Capua (1811-62), married Penelope Smyth. Leopold (1813-60) married Marie of Savoy-Carignan. Marie Antonia (1814-98) married Leopold II, Duke of Tuscany.
The identity of the artist is unknown but a miniature of the royal children, by Nicolas Dun, is recorded by Carlo Jeannerat in Bulletin de la Société de l’histoire de l’art français (1925), p. 109.
