A coloured photograph by Southwell Brothers dating from c.1866, the time of the Count's marriage to Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge.
Count Francis of Hohenstein, later Duke of Teck (1871), only son of Alexander, Duke of Württemberg, and Claudine, Countess of Rhéday, Countess Hohenstein. He served as a lieutenant in the Imperial Gendarmerie Guard and the 7th Imperial Hussars of the Austrian army before his marriage, in 1866, to Queen Victoria's first cousin, Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge, younger daughter of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. They had three sons and a daughter, Princess Victoria Mary of Cambridge, who subsequently became Queen Mary. The Duke of Teck was an accomplished artist and a number of his caricature sketches and watercolours are preserved in the Royal Library.
The photographic card is printed on the reverse with the photographer's details: SOUTHWELL / BROTHERS / Photographers Royal / 16 & 22 BAKER STREET, LONDON. A note on the reverse is inscribed in Queen Mary's hand with the name of the sitter.Provenance
