Edward Tayler (1828-1906)
Prince Albert Victor of Wales, later Duke of Clarence and Avondale (1864-1892) Signed and dated 1864

One of the group of miniatures of the younger members of the Royal Family completed by Tayler at Osborne House in the summer of 1864 (Court Circular, Sunday 7 August 1864). There is little indication in Tayler's portrait of the concerns that were expressed about the six-month-old Prince Albert Victor of Wales, a premature and underweight baby: 'our poor dear little gd: son', wrote Queen Victoria to her uncle, Leopold I, King of the Belgians, 'is … not very flourishing '. Although the Queen found him 'much grown & improved & a very great darling' the following month, Lady Macclesfield expressed the same reservations in her Journal later that year: 'I went to the Princess's room this morning, & found Princess Helena admiring the Baby, Prince Albert Victor, who is now just 10 months old. He is a merry lively little thing, and apparently very wiry & healthy, though extremely small in frame, & thin. I see no reason why he should not do well, but I wish he were bigger'.
