George II is wearing a steel cuirass (a piece of body armour). The eye has been painted 'blind' as in sculpture. The image is probably based on the gold medals made to commemorate the battle of Dettingen in 1743. There are minor differences in the shape of the wig and the armour but the profile is identical and was used later by Isaac Gosset (1713–1799), frame maker and wax modeller and Josiah Wedgwood (1730–1795) the potter. The identity of the miniaturist is unknown.
The miniature is set in a gold ring with the star of the Order of the Garter engraved on the reverse and George II engraved within the ring itself.
