Essex's copy, stated in the inscription to be after Sir William Ross, appears to be after an unrecorded sketch of 1849.
Françoise, princesse d'Orléans ('Chiquita'), only daughter of François, prince de Joinville, and Françoise, daughter of Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, married her cousin Robert, duc de Chartres, second son of Ferdinand, duc d'Orléans. Although a 'pretty child' in infancy, the princesse d' Orléans developed into a 'wild looking little Southerner', according to her uncle, Leopold I, King of the Belgians.
Signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in black paint: Princesse Françoise / d'Orléans, daughter of / the Prince de Joinville, / born aug. 14. 1844. / Painted by W. Essex Enamel / painter to Her Majesty & / H.R.H. Prince Albert after / Sir W. Ross R.A. / 1849. -
