A copy of the head and shoulders of Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha taken from Chalon's full-length watercolour dated 1839 (451817). The watercolour shows the Prince standing in front of Buckingham Palace and Marble Arch, which was sited there from its erection in 1827 until its removal in 1851 to its current position north east of Hyde Park.
Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, youngest son of Duke Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and Maria Antonia of Kohary, major-general in the Austrian army. He married morganatically in 1861 Constantine, daughter of Joseph Geiger, a Viennese music professor. She took the title Baroness von Ruttenstein on her marriage; they had one son, Baron Franz von Ruttenstein (d. 1899).
