A copy after a miniature in the Royal Collection (420601) showing the Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha wearing Imperial Russian uniform with the ribbon of the Rue Crown (Saxony), an Iron Cross, the crosses of St Anne and St Alexander Nevsky (Russia) and the Military Cross of St Henry of Saxony; and the stars of the Orders of St Stephen (Hungary), St Andrew (Russia), St Henry (Saxony), the Black Eagle (Prussia) and one other (obscured). The source is possibly by the Coburg court artist Carl Friedrich Ruprecht after a larger prototype known from a stipple engraving by Bolt (RCIN 610076). The inscription on the frame gives the date of the image as 1817, the year of the Duke's marriage. The miniature forms a pair with a dated enamel of Louise, Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha by Plant (422059) and may therefore date from 1847.
Signed and inscribed on the counter-enamel in black paint: ERNEST I. / Duke of Saxe Coburg / 1817. / W. Plant / after Ruprecht.Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1849 and given by her to Prince Albert
