Louis XV (1710-1774) Signed and dated 1722
Enamel | 8.1 x 6.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 421953
-
This late work by the leading enamellist Charles Boit is a particularly impressive example of his work in France, where he had fled as a result of financial difficulties after a long and successful period working at the English court from 1687 to 1714. On Boit's death, he had in his studio a pastel of Louis XV by Gustaf Lundberg, which it has been suggested may have been the source for this miniature. The king is shown wearing a crimson coat trimmed with gold, an ermine-lined blue cloak embroidered with fleurs-de-lis and the blue ribbon and star of the Order of St Esprit. At least two enamels of Louis XV by Boit are recorded in the eighteenth century, but it is not known whether either of them can be equated with the present enamel, which was acquired for the Royal Collection in 1852. Signed on the left: C. Boit (the 'CB' in monogram) and dated 1722.
