Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) c. 1902
Enamel on copper | 11.0 x 8.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 421932
-
This enamel miniature derives from a signed miniature by W. & D. Downey in the Royal Collection (421082) which is itself close to a photograph by Downey showing the Queen standing in her Coronation Robes resting her hands on a chair back (RCIN 2106312). However, there are variations in the costume in both versions in miniature, in which the Queen is shown wearing a white evening dress and a long pearl sautoir rather than in Coronation robes. It is displayed as a pair with a similar enamel of Edward VII (421930: Royal Collection).
