A high-quality presentation piece in unblemished condition, with an unusual pink counter-enamel, showing the hereditary Grand Duke wearing Prussian general's uniform with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Black Eagle and the neck badge of the Order of Maria Theresa. The hereditary Grand Duke had travelled to Berlin in the spring of 1847 to seek treatment from physicians there for a liver complaint, and it is likely that the miniature was painted there during his stay.
Frederick William, elder son of George, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and Marie Wilhelmine Friedericke, second daughter of Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel, married, in 1843, Princess Augusta, elder daughter of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge. He succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1860. He was considered 'rather a good looking young man' prior to his marriage in 1843 (RA VIC/Y 69/11), but suffered the onset of blindness in middle age.
Signed, dated and inscribed on the counter-enamel in black paint: Frederick Herry Gd Duke of / Mecklenburg-Strelitz / Presented by himself to / H.M. Queen Victoria / P.A. Ott. Pinxit / Hanau 1847Provenance
