Copied by Haslem after the miniature by Alexander Schäfer painted in Hanover earlier in the same year (420759: Royal Collection) showing the Queen of Hanover wearing a purple evening dress, pearl necklace, diamond tiara and lace veil with the badge of the Order of Louise of Prussia and George IV's family order.
Frederica, Princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, fifth daughter of Charles II, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, and Frederica, Princess of Hesse-Darmstadt, married, firstly in 1793, Prince Charles of Prussia, second son of Frederick William II, King of Prussia, and secondly, in 1798, Prince Frederick of Solms-Braunfels, from whom she was later divorced. She married, thirdly, in 1815, her first cousin, Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, later King of Hanover (1837). Her last marriage produced only one surviving son, who succeeded to the throne of Hanover as George V.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria from the artist in 1847
