Katherine Parr (1512-1548) Signed and dated 1844
Enamel | 4.8 x 3.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 421708
-
After an oil portrait by an unknown artist at Lambeth Palace. It is listed in inventories there and reproduced in engravings such as that published by W. Herbert on 15 February 1806 as a portrait of Katherine Parr. However, this identification has now been questioned, and the features of the sitter in this enamel, which do not resemble those in a newly authenticated likeness of King Henry VIII's sixth queen in the National Portrait Gallery, London (no. 4451), appear closer to those of Catherine of Aragon as depicted in miniatures by Lucas Hornebolte.
