A widow in broad white collar and widow's cap is the subject of this enamel which is decorated on the reverse with a crown above the entwined initials E[..], flanked by flowers and a scalloped border. The sitter was tentatively identified in the mid-nineteenth century as Anne of Austria, consort of Louis XIII and mother of Louis XIV (see 421415). The monogram on the reverse 'AD' appears to be that of the unidentified artist, working in a naïve mid-seventeenth century style.
