Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel (1747-1837), was the fourth son of Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel. In 1786, he married Caroline Polyxene of Nassau-Usingen and was the father of Augusta, Duchess of Cambridge. He was a general in the Dutch army. Here he is wearing the stars of the Hessian Order of the Lion, the Dutch Order of William, and three rows of campaign medals.
The identity of the artist is unknown.
The miniature is inscribed on the back in ink: Landgraf Friederich von Hessen + 1837. It is set in a rectangular frame with a ribbon cartouche engraved with his name.
