Zehngraf's miniature of Thrya, Duchess of Cumberland, Crown Princess of Hanover shows the sitter wearing a white dress with a diamond star at her breast, a pearl choker with a pendant cross and a rose corsage. It is set in an oval gold frame with reeded border, the reverse with easel-frame attachment in the form of a monogrammed TC.
Thyra, Duchess of Cumberland, third daughter of Christian IX, King of Denmark, and Louise, daughter of Landgrave William of Hesse-Cassel, married in 1878 Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, formerly Crown Prince of Hanover, son of George V, King of Hanover. Unlike her sisters, Queen Alexandra and the Empress Maria Feodorovna, consort of Alexander III, Emperor of Russia, she was 'not at all pretty' and according to Queen Victoria 'the only handsome part[s] of her are her eyes & figure' (RA VIC/ADDA/15/1884).
