Although signed and dated 1860, and clearly derived from the same sittings as another miniature of Princess Alice by Moira in the Royal Collection (421038), the note now attached to the reverse of the frame suggests that it was purchased for the Royal Collection at a later date by Queen Victoria. It may have been retained by the artist in his studio because it did not meet with Prince Albert's approval.
Signed and dated in red paint along the lower left edge: E. Moira 1860
