A copy by Johann Paul Fischer of Sir William Beechey's full-length oil portrait painted at painted at Windsor in 1799 – 1800 (405422; Royal Collection) showing the King wearing general officer's uniform and the star of the Order of the Garter, standing, full-length, in a landscape .with his charger held by a groom on the left. Many derivations in miniature exist, including copies by William Grimaldi and by Henry Bone in the Royal Collection.
This miniature was painted in the year in which Fischer arrived in England from Hanover to embark on a successful career as a miniature painter. Fischer never secured an official royal appointment, but enjoyed royal patronage nonetheless well into old age, submitting a picture for inspection by Queen Victoria as ''my perhaps last labours' in his eighty-eighth year in 1874 (RA PP/VIC/1873/15190). He died in London on 12 December 1875.Provenance
