Adolphus Frederick, Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850)? c. 1813
-
The Duke of Cambridge is wearing Field Marshal’s uniform and the star of the Order of the Garter. This is an unusual portrait of the duke and does not appear to be based on any other known image, so there is some uncertainty as to whether this is a portrait of the Duke of Cambridge. If it is the duke, it was probably painted shortly after his appointment as Field Marshal in November 1813.
The identity of the artist is unknown, but it could be a member of the Bone family.
In the back of the miniature is a small twist of light brown hair on pale green silk, and the prince’s name is inscribed on a gold cartouche (scroll) below the frame.
