Lady Charlotte Finch, wife of the Hon. William Finch, Vice Chamberlain of the Household, was Governess in Ordinary to the children of George III and Queen Charlotte from 1762 until 1792, and a close associate of the royal family until her death at St James's Palace in 1813.
This miniature is signed on the reverse by Princess Elizabeth, third daughter of George III and Queen Charlotte, and an accomplished artist. Although it is of the same type as another miniature of Lady Charlotte in the Royal Collection (422083), Princess Elizabeth thanks Lady Charlotte for sitting to her for the miniature in a letter dated 5 August 1802 (GEO/ADD/15/8173). An annotation at the head of the letter suggests that the original miniature on which all later copies were based was by Anne Mee.
Signed on the reverse in ink: 'Eliza/ The Picture of Lady Charlotte Finch'Provenance
Probably entered the Royal Collection at Princess Elizabeth's death in 1840
