This miniature is a fine, signed example of the work of Nicholas Dixon, court limner to Charles II from 1673-8. It was first recorded in 1910 as a portrait of 'Amelia, Countess of Ossory' but comparison with a portrait by William Wissing in the collection of the Earl of Clarendon suggests that the sitter is Anne Hyde (d. 1685), wife of James Butler, Earl of Ossory, later 2nd Duke of Ormond. The miniature may date from the time of the sitter's marriage, in 1682. Signed on the right: 'ND' (monogram).
