Watercolour on ivory laid on card | 7.4 x 6.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420918

The Hon. Fanny Byng is shown, aged four years, her head turned in profile to the right, wearing a blue dress with white lace sleeves trimmed with blue ribbon. The miniature does not appear to have been retouched, but the profile is unusually stilted and stiff for one of Sir William Ross's child subjects. A version by Ross was given by Queen Victoria to Lady Torrington (present location unknown).
The Honourable Frances Elizabeth Byng, only child of George Byng, 7th Viscount Torrington, and Mary Anne Astley, daughter of Sir John Dugdale Astley.
Inscribed on the reverse in ink: The Hon: / Fanny Byng [the y corrected by another hand from i] / born Jany 14 1835 / painted by Ross / 1839Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1839
