Watercolour on ivory | 8.4 x 6.6 cm (sight) (sight) | RCIN 420911

Louisa, Queen of Prussia (1776-1810), was the fourth daughter of Charles II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1793, she married Frederick William III, King of Prussia.
This is a copy, possibly by the artist himself, of Peter Edward Stroehling’s (1768-after 1826) full-length portrait in the Royal Collection (RCIN 404867). Stroehling was a portrait and miniature painter, believed to have been a Russian and educated at the Tsar’s expense. He worked all over Europe but spent much of the first two decades of the nineteenth century in London. Between 1810 and 1820 he was even referred to as ‘Historical Painter to the Prince of Wales’.
