Henry VII (1457-1509) 1700 - 1800
Watercolour on vellum stuck to card | 4.2 cm (Diameter) (support, diameter) | RCIN 420901
-
This miniature and its pair (Henry VIII; 422243) were seen by Lionel Cust, Surveyor of The Queen's Pictures, c. 1920 when they were in the collection of Major-General the Rt. Hon. J.E.B. Seely (1868-1947) who became the first Baron Mottistone in 1933. Cust considered the pair to be by Holbein, and shortly after Cust's visit, the miniature of Henry VIII was given to George V; the present miniature was bequeathed to H.M. The Queen by the second Baron Mottistone. Both miniatures are now considered to be by a later, probably eighteenth century hand. The present work appears to derive loosely from the representation of Henry VII in the Whitehall mural by Henry VIII, destroyed by fire but known from the surviving cartoon in the National Portrait Gallery (4027) and the copy by Remigius van Leemput in the Royal Collection (400046). However, the image is used in reverse in the miniature. Engraved on the reverse of the reverse of the frame with the inscription: 'Henricuss VII D G Rex Ang. Fran et Hib 1508'.
Provenance
Henry, second Baron Mottistone (1899-1963); bequeathed by him to H.M. The Queen.
