Portrait of an unknown Knight of the Garter c.1630-60
Oil on tortoiseshell | 7.5 x 5.9 cm (sight) | RCIN 420896
-
This oil miniature probably once formed the base of a set of mica overlays (see 422098-9), which are now missing. It is unusual in being executed in oil on tortoiseshell; normally the base layers of such sets were painted in oil on copper. The subject is a young knight of the Garter, wearing an elaborately embroidered red and gold doublet with slashed sleeves. The subject may be fanciful, rather than intended as an accurate portrait.
