Princess Louise of Belgium (1858-1924) c.1858-60
Watercolour on ivory laid on card | 2.3 x 1.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420877

With this miniature of Princess Louise is preserved the gilt surround of the original frame, inscribed: 'mon arrière petite fille'. This suggests that it was formerly in the possession of Marie-Amèlie, Queen of the French, grandmother of the sitter, and that it was perhaps given by her to Queen Victoria, in whose collection it is first recorded in 1870.
Princess Louise of Belgium, eldest daughter of Leopold, Duke of Brabant, later Leopold II, King of Belgium, and Marie, Duchess of Brabant, married, in 1875, Prince Philip of Saxe-Coburg, son of Prince Augustus of Saxe-Coburg and Princess Clementine d'Orléans. The marriage was dissolved in 1906.Provenance
Possibly a gift from Marie-Amèlie, Queen of the French, grandmother of the sitter, to Queen Victoria.
