Portrait of an Officer c.1815-25
-
This officer is wearing the uniform of the 11th Bengal Native Infantry regiment. It was acquired for the Royal Collection as a portrait of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, but this identity is mistaken as the Duke would not have worn this uniform.
The identity of the artist is unknown, but many British miniaturists tried their luck in India at this time, and it may have been painted before the officer’s departure, possibly together with a portrait of his wife (RCIN 420838).
The miniature is inscribed on the backing paper in pencil: Duke of Cambridge.
