Prince Alexander (1813-71) was the third son of Emmanuel, Count of Mensdorff-Pouilly. In 1857, he married Alexandrine, Countess of Dietrichstein-Proskau-Leslie, and inherited through her the principality of Dietrichstein-Nikolsburg.
This is one of four portraits of Alexander and his brothers (RCIN 420792, 420794, 420795, 420798) all painted by the same artist about 1825-6. The identity of the artist is unknown.
