Queen Victoria acquired a number of eye miniatures by Sir William Ross and other miniaturists (see no. 422252; Royal Collection) throughout the 1840s and 1850s, although not all the sitters were identified in the accounts ('Sir W: Ross paintings of eyes £12.15'; RA VIC/Add T. 232/55). Queen Victoria recorded an eye miniature of the Duchesse de Nemours in her possession on 16 November 1857: 'Took Nemours aside & gave him the copy of the miniature of her dear eye (the original is mine), he having lost his …' (RA QVJ), but the Duchess is shown with blue eyes in her miniature by Ross (420921) and cannot therefore be represented here.
