This miniature is identified as Dr. Hawker on the basis of an engraving by B. Woodman 'from a painting in the possession of the publisher taken by G.PATTEN ESQr. Only a few months before the author's decease, expressly for this edition'. The original painting (current location unknown), as depicted in the engraving, showed Hawker seated beside a table of books, his spectacles in his right hand.
Dr Robert Hawker, DD, was vicar of the parish of Charles, Plymouth, for 43 years. He spread his ultra-Calvinist views through his powerful pulpit oratory and a large number of devotional works. His Sermons on the Divinity of Christ (1792) earned him the Diploma of DD from Edinburgh University.
Inscribed on the reverse in pencil: Dr. Hawker. An old backing card preserved with the miniature is inscribed in ink: No. 12641.Provenance
The artist's widow; Mrs Emma Kemsley; possibly acquired from Mrs Kemsley by Queen Victoria in 1877.
