Clearly by the hand of Anthony Stewart (1777-1846), whose characteristic green stippled background is fully evident here. An oval enamel copy by John Haslem is in the Royal Collection (421351). The inscription on the reverse of that copy gives Princess Feodora's age as sixteen, which suggests a date of 1823/4 for Stewart's original; this is several years earlier than the date which is engraved on the reverse of the frame.
Anthony Stewart trained with the Scottish landscapist Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh before turning to miniature painting, firstly in Edinburgh and later in London. He specialised in painting children.Provenance
First recorded in the Royal Collection during the reign of Queen Victoria
