This miniature is one of two by Stewart in the Royal Collection (see also 420742) depicting Queen Victoria's half-sister, Princess Feodora of Leiningen, later Princess Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Although both miniatures are similar in composition, the configuration of the Princess's ringlets differs and the additional fullness in the face points to this miniature being the earlier of the two by some two to three years. It must show the Princess at around the age of fourteen and date from c.1820 – 21.
Anthony Stewart trained with the Scottish landscapist Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh before turning to miniature painting, firstly in Edinburgh and later in London. He specialised in painting children.Provenance
First recorded in the Royal Collection during the reign of Queen Victoria
