Elizabeth, Princess Palatine, Abbess of Hereford (1618-1680) c. 1651
Watercolour on vellum laid on card with a gessoed back | 6.0 x 4.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420687

This miniature is close in style to two signed miniatures by Nathaniel Thach of members of the House of the Palatinate (420684; 420691) in the Royal Collection. On this basis, it has been attributed to Thach, who is thought to have spent his working career abroad at The Hague, as all but one of his surviving miniatures represent members of the family and circle of the exiled King and Queen of Bohemia. The present miniature appears to have been copied from a painting by or after Gerrit van Honthorst (version sold Christie's, London, 23 July 1982 lot 118b).
Elizabeth, Princess Palatine, was the eldest daughter of Frederick V and Elizabeth of Bohemia. She became Abbess of Herford and was a close friend of Réné Descartes.Provenance
First recorded in the Royal Collection during the reign of Queen Victoria
