Enamel | 7.4 x 6.2 cm (sight) | RCIN 420666
-
A youthful Frederick, Prince of Wales is depicted in this imposing enamel wearing armour with the ribbon of the Order of the Garter and a purple ermine-lined mantle around his right shoulder. The enamel is dated 1724, ten years after Charles Boit had left the English court where he had pursued a successful career as Court Enamellist firstly to William III and later to Queen Anne between 1696 and 1714, and must have been painted in Paris where Boit had settled. The source of the enamel is not known, but it may have been based on a pastel. An inventory of the artist's studio taken after his death includes a portrait of Frederick, Prince of Wales. Signed and dated on the right: 'C Boit f[...] 1724' (the 'C' and 'B' forming a monogram)
