This miniature, by Charlotte Jones (1768-1847), is thought to be based on an oil portrait by Richard Cosway, but the original is not known. Princess Charlotte gave it to her sub-governess, Martha Udny, in 1807 when she was 10 years old. They were not always on the best of terms, however, and in the same year Charlotte included a clause in her will: ‘Nothing to Miss Udny, for reasons’.
The miniature is one of a series of 12 portraits by Jones depicting the princess from when she was a child to the commemorative portrait of 1818. Jones was a pupil of Richard Cosway. She worked in London and Manchester and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1823. She was appointed miniature painter to Princess Charlotte in 1808.
The miniature is inscribed by the artist on the backing card in ink: Her Royal Highness / the Princess Charlotte of Wales / 1807 / Charlotte Jones / Pinxit. A card accompanying the miniature is inscribed, in different handwriting: The Gift of her Royal Highness the Princess Charlotte 1807 to Martha Udny Painted by Miss Jones. The dog is a Portrait of my favourite Lioni.
