Albert Henry (1742-61) was the son of Charles I, duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. He was wounded at the Battle of Hamm on 20 July 1761 and died aged 19. This portrait was probably painted after his death to commemorate his bravery. He is depicted wearing Brunswick uniform over a steel cuirass (a piece of body armour). In the background a telescope or baton rests on a cushion and the miniature is set in a painted frame with military trophies and olive branches.

The miniature is very similar to a portrait engraved by Johann Martin Bernigeroth at Leipzig, Germany, which is set in a fictive stone oval frame and shows a battered castle wall. The head of the duke is very close to that in a portrait by Johann Georg Ziesenis at Marienburg, Germany.

The identity of the artist is unknown.
