The identification of this sitter is uncertain, but his presentation in Roman dress bears comparison with other sitters from the House of Brunswick depicted in this way in miniature c. 1670-80 (see for example 420624 and 420628 by Jean Michelin). It has been suggested that it may represent John Frederick, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Kalenburg on the basis of comparison with a miniature in the manner of Michelin in the Royal Collection (420633).
