This miniature, formerly identified as Augustus, Prince of Prussia (1774-1843), has recently been re-identified as Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1778-1819) with reference to a named sketch in an album of drawings by the Chevalier de Chateaubourg in the State Russian Museum (P37896, March 15, 1798). It is a rare example of the work of this accomplished artist, who turned to miniature painting after a military career, and travelled to London (1791) and Berlin (1797) before settling in St Petersburg (1800).
Inscribed in pencil on the back: August ... Duke of Saxe-Goth & Altenburg (as Hereditary Prince) Prin [ce Albert's] grandfather ...Provenance
