Duke George (1761-1803) succeeded aged two jointly with his brother Karl in 1763 under the regency of their mother. He ruled jointly from 1781 and as sole ruler from 1782 on the death of his brother. He married Luise Eleonore of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and was Queen Adelaide’s father.
The miniature is based on a portrait by Johann Heinrich Schroeder, who came from Meiningen and painted many royal portraits. It is known from a line and stipple engraving by H Lips and C Müller. The identity of the artist is unknown.
