Sophia was the daughter of Georg Wilhelm, Graf (Count) von Erbach. In 1742, she married William Henry, Prince of Nassau-Saarbrucken, who died in 1768. The identity of the artist is unknown.
Inscribed on the back in an eighteenth- or nineteenth-century hand in ink: Sophie Chrettiene Charlotte / Princess Douairière de Nassau-Saarbruch, née Comtesse de'Erbach-Erbach. / née le 12 juillet 1725, / mariée le 28 février 1742.Provenance
