Frederick Augustus (1750-1827) succeeded his father as elector of Saxony in 1763 and, in 1806, became Frederick Augustus I, king of Saxony.
This is a copy of a portrait by Anton Graff (1736-1813) which was known from numerous line engravings, including one of 1792 by Johann Friedrich Bause (1738-1814). The miniature may be by Graff himself. Graff was a Swiss-born German, a prolific portrait painter and miniaturist known as the 'Van Dyck of Germany'. He spent most of his life in Dresden where he settled in 1766 and was appointed painter to the court of Saxony.
Inscribed on the card backing: A King of Saxony.Provenance
