Prince Frederick William of Prussia visited Balmoral in the autumn of 1855 during his courtship of the Princess Royal and became engaged to her in September of that year. Queen Victoria wrote to Leopold I, King of the Belgians, at the time: ' I cannot say how I love him; his devotion & affection towards & confidence in me not to speak of his decided passion for V - have touched and delighted me. He is as pure & good as gold'.
