Christian Frederick (1736-1806) is wearing the orange ribbon and star of the Order of the Black Eagle. He was the son of Charles, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach, whom he succeeded in 1757, adding the duchy of Bayreuth in 1769. His first marriage was in 1754 to Frederica Carolina, daughter of Hans Josias, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. His second marriage in 1791 was to Elizabeth, daughter of Graf August von Berkeley. The miniature may have been painted at the time of his first marriage, or to celebrate his succession to the margravate.
