Frederick William (1770-1840) is wearing Prussian uniform and the star of the Order of the Black Eagle. He was the eldest son of Frederick William II, whom he succeeded as King of Prussia in 1797, and Frederica, daughter of Louis IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1793, he married Louisa, daughter of Charles, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. His second marriage in 1813 was to Augusta, Countess of Harrach. In 1813, he joined Tsar Alexander I in alliance against Napoleon.
Heinrich Anton Dähling was born in Hanover in Germany but settled in Berlin and exhibited at the Berlin Academy between 1798 and 1839. His portraits included members of the Prussian royal family.
