A rather timid effort by an artist who achieved some early success in his career as a miniaturist but was greatly affected by the introduction of photography. The identity of the sitter is confirmed by comparison with a miniature by A.E. Chalon of the Duchess at Powis Castle (T/POW/D/22); the artist's daughter wrote of the Duchess as being 'one of his kindest Patrons' (RA PP/VIC/6507).
Lady Charlotte Florentia Clive, second daughter of Edward, 1st Earl of Powis, married in 1817, Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland. She was appointed State Governess to Princess Victoria in 1831 to accompany her on public occasions.
Signed, dated and inscribed on the reverse in ink: Her Grace / The Duchess of Northumberland. / Painted by Tho s. Overton. / 1839.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria from Mary Overton, the artist's daughter, in March 1870
