Probably the miniature of the Prince of Leiningen, Queen Victoria's half-brother, recorded in Queen Victoria's accounts in 1840 (2 December 1840: 'W.C.Ross. Prince Leiningen £31.10' [30 guineas] RA PP/VIC/MAIN/ACC/LED/1837 – 1849/6). A reference in the accounts almost 20 years later, and several years after the death of the sitter in 1856, to 'Sir Will. Ross miniature of the Pr. of Leiningen £31.10.0.' (30 guineas) (RA VIC/ADDT/232/10) may refer to a version of this miniature but could also refer to the succeeding Prince of Leiningen, Charles's eldest son, Prince Ernest of Leiningen. The present miniature can in any event be dated between 1838 and 1840 and must have been painted after Prince Charles of Leiningen was created KG in November 1837. The scale the miniature precludes it from being 'Charles' picture (in a bracelet)' which Ross had just painted for Queen Victoria when she showed it to Lord Melbourne on 18 July 1838 (RA QVJ: 18 July 1838).
Inscribed on the reverse in ink: Charles Fred k. Will m. Emich./ Ross / Pinxit.Provenance
