-
Napoleon Francis Joseph Charles, known as Napoleon II, was the son of Napoleon I and Marie Louise, Archduchess of Austria. He was created King of Rome when he was born. In 1814, he was taken by his mother to Austria, and in 1818 his grandfather, Francis I of Austria, conferred on him the title of Duke of Reichstadt. He died of tuberculosis at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna on 22 July 1832. Here he is holding a sceptre and orb, a golden globe surmounted by a cross which forms part of the regalia of a monarch, and wearing the red ribbon of the Legion of Honour.
This is a copy of a portrait by Baron François Gérard at Versailles, France. The identity of the artist is unknown.
