A posthumous copy of an unknown miniature of the Duchess dating from c.1828. The Duchess of Inverness was a popular figure within the Royal Family, and on the death of the Duke of Sussex in 1843, Queen Adelaide told Queen Victoria that she found the Duchess: 'as composed as possible under the sad circumstances, and full of gratitude to you and all the family for all the kindness which she had received' (Letters 1907, I, p. 600: Queen Adelaide to Queen Victoria, 22 April 1843).
Cecilia, daughter of Sir Arthur Saunders Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran, married firstly, in 1815, Sir George Buggin, and secondly, in 1831, Augustus, Duke of Sussex. She was created Duchess of Inverness in 1840.
